The Role of the Equine Nervous System 

The nervous system is a complex network that controls every aspect of a horse’s movement and bodily function. It consists of the central nervous system (CNS), which includes the brain and spinal cord, and the peripheral nervous system (PNS), which connects the CNS to the rest of the body. 

Key functions of the horse’s nervous system include:

  • Motor control: The brain sends signals through the spinal cord and nerves to coordinate muscle movement.
  • Sensory perception: Nerve receptors relay information about touch, pain, temperature, and limb position back to the brain.
  • Proprioception: This is the body’s ability to sense its position and movement, crucial for balance and coordination.
  • Reflexes: Automatic responses that help protect the horse from injury, such as withdrawing a limb from a painful stimulus.
  • Autonomic functions: Regulates involuntary processes like heart rate, digestion, and respiration.

When any part of the nervous system is impaired, these essential functions can be disrupted, leading to signs of neurological dysfunction and impacting the horse’s ability to move safely and efficiently.

What Does it Mean for a Horse to be “Neurological”?

When a horse is described as “neurological,” it means that there is an impairment in its nervous system that affects its ability to move and respond normally. This can be due to issues in the brain, spinal cord, or peripheral nerves. 

Neurological horses often exhibit signs such as incoordination, weakness, and difficulty balancing. Many horse people hear the word “neurological,” and visualize a horse that is walking with a seemingly haywire hind end. 

The severity of neurological dysfunction can range from mild proprioceptive deficits to severe ataxia and dangerous loss of mobility. Of course, identifying the underlying cause and getting your horse veterinary treatment as soon as possible is essential. During the recovery phase, appropriate rehabilitation strategies can greatly impact the horse’s future quality of life.

What Causes Neurological Dysfunction in Horses?

Neurological dysfunction in horses can arise from various conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, or peripheral nerves. 

Some of the most common causes include:

  1. Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis (EPM): Caused by the protozoan Sarcocystis neurona, which infects the central nervous system.
  2. Cervical Vertebral Malformation (Wobbler Syndrome): A developmental or degenerative condition causing compression of the spinal cord, which tends to particularly impact the hind limbs.
  3. Equine Herpesvirus Myeloencephalopathy (EHM): A viral infection that can cause fever, respiratory symptoms, and neurological issues due to inflammation of the blood vessels in the spinal cord and brain.
  4. Equine Degenerative Myeloencephalopathy (EDM): A progressive, inherited neurological disorder often linked to vitamin E deficiency.
  5. Shivering:  Shivers is a neurological condition characterized by uncontrollable muscle tremors and an abnormal gait. It often manifests as trembling or twitching in the muscles, particularly when the horse is asked to move backward, ascend a hill, or navigate uneven terrain. It is thought to be related to cerebellar disfunction.
  6. Trauma-Related Spinal Cord Injury: While this is more of a “fluke,” falls, kicks, or accidents can cause direct injury to the spinal cord in certain cases. 

What Are the Signs of Neurological Dysfunction in Horses?

Neurological disorders in horses manifest in various ways, and early detection is essential for effective intervention. 

Typical signs of a neurologic issue include:

  • Ataxia (incoordination): Affected horses may appear wobbly or have difficulty navigating uneven terrain.
  • Muscle weakness: Loss of strength, particularly in the hindquarters, can result in stumbling or difficulty rising.
  • Muscle atrophy: also known as neurogenic atrophy, where muscles lose mass and function due to a disruption in neural pathways. 
  • Proprioceptive deficits: Horses may misplace their limbs or have delayed reactions when navigating obstacles.
  • Spinal pain or stiffness: Some neurological conditions cause hypersensitivity or discomfort along the spine.
  • Abnormal posture and balance issues: Horses may have difficulty standing square or shifting weight evenly between limbs.

If your horse displays any of these neurologic symptoms, we cannot stress this enough: Please call your veterinarian as soon as possible! As you can imagine, an animal as large as a horse with these kinds of symptoms can be dangerous to both itself and others around them. Prompt and proper diagnosis and treatment are CRUCIAL. Once you have an accurate diagnosis and plan, incorporating targeted physical rehabilitation can enhance recovery outcomes.

The Role of Core Engagement in Neurological Rehabilitation

Horses with neurological dysfunction often struggle with coordination and stability, which is directly related to core engagement.
