When we talk about training a balanced horse, it is often within the context of the horse’s athletic abilities, conformation, or even the rider’s equitation. The truth is that balance and stability is a shared responsibility that extends across all aspects of the horse’s life, from owner to farrier to genetics.

Why Balance Matters for the Horse
A balanced horse moves with fluidity, appropriate core engagement, and efficient distribution of the weight across all four limbs. A balanced horse is more comfortable, less prone to injury, and better able to perform its job, whether that be weekend trail riding, Grand Prix dressage, or rodeo!
Disruptions to balance and dynamic stability, however, can lead to strain, stiffness, behavioral resistance, compensatory movement patterns, and long-term musculoskeletal issues.
There are many factors that contribute to a horse’s balance. In this article, we are simply focusing on one variable: weight, and weight distribution of the rider.
How Does a Rider Impact the Horse?
As soon as the rider mounts, they inevitably disrupt the horse’s natural balance, both horizontally (forehand vs. hindquarters) and vertically (left vs. right). This is bound to occur: Think about how your body shifts when you wear a backpack! Just like us, horses compensate for even subtle imbalances by shifting weight, tensing muscles, or moving asymmetrically. This change can be subtle, or overtly obvious.
To support their horse’s balance, riders need awareness of their own position and direction of forces. Horizontal balance is about how weight is shared between front and back, while vertical balance concerns left and right weight distribution. That means rider force, which varies with speed and type of movement (ex. rising trot is more disruptive than walk), is more useful to consider than just static rider weight.
The rider’s straightness is also central. Sitting unevenly makes the horse move crooked, too. A neutral, centered seat helps the horse move more freely and symmetrically. This of course brings up the question of saddle fit, which impacts both horse and rider.
Horses are very forgiving, so this is not intended to shame anyone, but rather bring attention to a topic that requires lifelong commitment and learning! Some things that can be beneficial as you develop your balance include:
- Having a friend video you while riding at different gaits and through varying transitions
- Riding in an arena with mirrors
- Regular exercise off the horse, such as yoga, cycling, and pilates
What The Research Tells Us
Research shows that most horses moving at moderate speeds do not experience significant changes in their gait or energy use until the rider to horse body:weight ratio exceeds about 20–25%. That said, some horses can safely carry more, depending on factors like their build, condition, and fitness level. Certain breeds, like Icelandic horses and Taishuh ponies, are actually known for being able to carry a higher percentage of their body weight, compared to larger horse breeds.
Another key insight: Even within the “acceptable” load range (typically defined as 10-20% of the horse’s body weight), horses display differences in spinal movement, stride symmetry, and muscle activation, depending on how balanced the rider is in the saddle. Like we mentioned above, rider weight isn’t just about mass, it is also about how the rider carries and distributes that mass. An unbalanced or unstable rider, regardless of size, creates more of a disruptive force through the horse’s back and core.
A Closer Look At Equine Biomechanics
Let’s break down what’s actually happening biomechanically when a horse carries weight:
- Spinal Compression and Tension. When a horse carries a rider, the thoracolumbar spine (mid to lower back) becomes the primary support structure. Excessive or poorly distributed weight can lead to compression in the vertebrae and surrounding soft tissues. Over time, this can result in pain, reduced mobility, or compensatory postures that affect the horse’s entire frame.
- Core Muscle Recruitment. To maintain posture and stabilize the spine under load, horses activate their deep and superficial abdominal and oblique muscles, and deep and superficial long back muscles. If these muscles are underdeveloped or fatigued, the horse may hollow its back, disengage the hindquarters, or rely too heavily on the forehand—all of which compromise balance.
- Altered Limb Mechanics. Additional weight changes how a horse places its feet. Stride length may shorten, joint angles may shift, and loading rates on tendons and ligaments can increase. This doesn’t just impact performance; it increases the risk of overuse injuries, particularly in the stifles, hocks, and suspensory system.
- Recovery and Fatigue. Horses asked to carry more weight or to carry it in an unstable manner tend to show more elevated heart rates, longer recovery times, and signs of muscular fatigue sooner than those carrying less weight. This can affect the horse’s willingness to work and overall well-being.
Remember, it’s not just about the scale! While weight percentage matters, it is critical to remember that balance and stability play an equally important role. A skilled, balanced rider who moves in harmony with the horse may have a significantly lower “impact weight” than a lighter rider who is tense, crooked, or bouncing in the saddle.
